On April 20, 2018, FANTA hosted prominent global nutrition researchers and senior USAID nutrition technical staff for a research roundtable to review results of recent USAID-funded nutrition research on the prevention of malnutrition in the first 1,000 days, synthesize programmatic implications stemming from the research, and identify remaining knowledge gaps. Moderated by Professor Reynaldo Martorell, the participants engaged in constructive discussions on a wide range of topics including the success of the interventions studied by USAID-funded research, the suitability of stunting as an indicator for various purposes, designing multisectoral interventions at scale that meet the population’s needs and have a chance of success, the sustainability of intervention impacts, advocacy for investment in nutrition, and the involvement of the private sector. USAID’s Omar Dary closed with remarks on the measurement of nutritional status and the evaluation of the success of nutrition interventions, and offered some thoughts on programmatic implications.
