Foodborne and waterborne diarrheal disease kills an estimated 2 million people annually. Evidence suggests that food is equal to and may be more important than water as a route of transmission of diarrhea in developing countries. In response to the increased awareness regarding foodborne disease in developing countries, FANTA conducted a literature review to investigate how donors, partners, and programs can reduce this burden at the household level. The report and technical brief document interventions to improve food hygiene, identify key actions to prevent foodborne illness, identify research and programming gaps in food hygiene, and identify short and long-term programmatic recommendations.
